Pet Vaccinations for Preventative Care

Pet Vaccinations

One important part of veterinary pet care, besides having the veterinarian examine your pet with a pet exam, is pet vaccinations. This is preventative care for the possibility that your dog could get Lyme disease or another type of dangerous disease. We at North Heights Veterinary Clinic serving Appleton, WI, know a lot about pet vaccinations and preventative care. A veterinarian on our veterinary team is here to help with pet care.

Core Vs. Non-Core Vaccines

When you take your pet to a vet on our veterinary team, the veterinarian will check to see if your pet has been vaccinated for rabies or distemper. If it has been over a year, the vet may give them another rabies vaccine. This is known as a core vaccine. It plays a big part in keeping your dog healthy.

Then there are non-core vaccines. A vet on our veterinary team may ask questions about your dog's lifestyle. Do they spend a lot of time outdoors in wooded areas? Or are they mostly indoors save for very brief walks? If it is the first one, then they may elect to give a Lyme vaccine as a way to help prevent illness. Like many other illnesses, it will not work if your dog is already sick with Lyme Disease. Non-core vaccines tend to be at the vet's discretion.

Preventative Care

Another important thing, besides the vaccine, is to get supplies that offer flea and tick prevention. These can include chews or topical oinments. Check your dog after spending time in the outdoors to ensure that they are not bringing home any unwanted guests and be sure to adminster flea and tick prevention at the appropriate times.
